Sky Broadband

Use the following link to open a New web browser window new browser window, or type 192.168.0.1 in the address bar of a new tab/window and press Enter. Please note that the following link can only change the wireless settings of a computer that is linked to your own personal Sky broadband service. Also please remember that while you carry out the following steps, you will be making changes to your wireless connection, so you may need to reconnect or refresh the page before continuing at certain points.

1.On a PC that is connected to your Sky broadband, enter the address http://192.168.0.1
into the address bar:

In the sign in box, enter username: admin and password: sky.

To change your Sky Broadband wireless router settings follow the steps below

From the main menu on the left had side, click Wireless Settings under Set up.
If you do not want to use the router wirelessly, clear the tick box for Enable Wireless Access Point then select Apply. This will prevent any unauthorised user from accessing your wireless network.

To change your Sky Broadband wireless router settings follow the steps below.

If you intend to use the Wireless Network, then change the default password (also referred to as a network key) in the WPA-PSK Security Encryption section to one of your own choosing. Your password can be characters and numbers – we recommend a mixture of both. Type in your new password, then select Apply. This will make it very difficult for any unauthorised users to access your wireless network.

Lost Password - Reset

Write down the new password (network key) somewhere secure or on your Wireless Settings ‘Keep me handy’ card provided with the router, to be stored in a safe place. If you forget your new Wireless network password, you can either change the password to a new one following the steps above, or reset your Sky wireless router to the default settings - which will reset the Wireless network password to the Network Key/password listed on the label on the bottom of your router.
To reset your Sky wireless router to the default settings, with your Sky Broadband box switched on, press and hold a blunt pointed object (such as a pen) in the small reset button on the back until the test light blinks, then release the button. Your Sky Broadband box will restart with the default settings.

Firefox Made Faster!

How to Hack Firefox to Make it Faster!

Mozilla's Firefox browser is good. With a little minor "tweaking", however, you can make Firefox perform up to 40% faster for page transfers. With just a few clicks and some typing, you can experience faster browsing and surfing Firefox. Read below for how.

Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 3 minutes
Here's How:
  1. Open the Firefox "config" page: click into the Firefox address location bar, and type about:config, press Enter.
  2. The "Config" file will appear in the Firefox browser as a page with hundreds of lines of code in it. Now, we start by enabling some advanced tabbed options:

  3. Locate the line browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs . (tip: press "b" on your keyboard to quick scroll).
  4. Double click on browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs . This will set its toggle to "true". Now your advanced and enhanced tabbing should be set.

Note: in Firefox version 1.5, the command line is singlewindow.openintabs.
  5. Next: we will increase the "pipeline" RAM ability for Firefox to accomodate more packet transfer. In the same config document, scroll down to the line that says network.http.pipelining . Double click this line to set it to "true".
  6. Lastly, we will increase the maximum pipeline requests to 100. Find the line that says network.http.pipelining.maxrequests. Double click on it, and a dialog box will pop up. Change the setting from 4 to 100.
  7. No need to save this file. Simply close and restart Firefox, and you should see an immediate 10% to 40% increase in web page transfer speed, and faster opening of your tabbed windows! Enjoy!

Some of the sites listed above reside on the same IP address (for instance http://watson.microsoft.com and http://officewatson.officeupdate.microsoft.com). You could list access to sites by providing the IP address, but occasionally these URLs change and move to a different IP address, which may result in a broken link. It is suggested to use the URL name (http://address>), which is more likely to remain the same over time.

A simple solution for allowing access to Microsoft

A simple solution for enabling access to Office related Microsoft Web sites is to add the following information to your list of allowed Web sites using the administrative features of your proxy server:

*.microsoft.com

For port 80 or port 443.

Be sure to set your system to allow access to this URL for port 80 and port 443.

However, if you want users to access most of the sites in the above domain with the exception of Windows Update or Office Update, you face a bigger challenge, but it is possible. To block access to these update sites, you block the following URL names by using proxy server settings:

http://v3.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://update.microsoft.com

Youtube Loading Slow?

Youtube has been really slow for last few weeks, some users say months. After all it takes ages lately before you can run a video, all you see is endless loading and slow buffering. Let’s presume you don’t have a dial-up connection, if so it’s very advisable not to run videos in high quality (HQ) or high definition (HD).

1. Go to your account setting - Playback Setup - Click On, I have a slow connection. Never play higher-quality video. Save Changes... If this does not work, Read below for more information, how to speed up your youtube account...

If you have ADSL connection or higher, follow these steps to make Youtube loading fast again. We are going to change DNS servers you got from your ISP.

This particularly method to speed up Youtube is shown for Windows Vista, but should look quite similar on XP, or even with Windows 7.

01] Go Windows Start button, and run Control Panel.
02] Click on Network and Sharing Center.
03] Select Manage network connections.
04] Double click on active internet connection, probably named as Local Area Connection.
05] Click Properties.
06] Now double click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), located in middle form.
07] Select Use the following DNS server addressed, and change them to:

Preferred DNS Server: 208.67.222.222
Alternate DNS Server: 208.67.222.220

Updated on 19.09.2011: If you are located in Europe, I would recommend you to use Google’s public DNS servers:

Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8
Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.4.4

08] Click OK to confirm changes to Open DNS servers.

Great. Youtube videos should be loading fast again.

Do you still have problems?

A big cause of slow YouTube video playback is down to slow, or damaged Internet connection. The problem you have is that each time you watch a YouTube video online, it will actually download the entire movie to the “Internet Cache” of your PC. With YouTube videos now ranging from 100mb to 2gb in size, this requires a high powered Internet connection on your system, which many people don’t have.

Click onto “SpeedTest.net
Check your connection speed
If it’s slower than what you’re paying for; or is below 500kb/s, then you should consult with your ISP to fix the problem

Flush DNS

Most operating systems and DNS clients will automatically cache IP Addresses and other DNS results, this is done in order to speed up subsequent requests to the same hostname. Sometimes bad results will be cached and therefore need to be cleared from the cache in order for you to communicate with the host correctly. All major operating systems allow you to force this process, outlined below are the common steps you will need to follow in order to flush your DNS cache.

Windows 98/NT/2000/XP Flush DNS

Flushing the DNS on Windows is an easy process, outlined below is the steps that should be run if you wish to clear your DNS cache.

Open up a command prompt (Start > Run > "cmd.exe" > OK).
Type in the command "ipconfig /flushdns"
Windows Vista / Windows 7 Flush DNS

Flushing DNS on newer versions of Windows is almost as easy as the earlier versions but due to Microsofts security additions you must run the command prompt with administrator privileges.

Click the start button and navigate to the command prompt (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt)
Make sure that you right click on the command prompt application and choose "Run as Administrator"
Type in the command "ipconfig /flushdns"

Note: It is also possible to type in "cmd" into the Windows Vista / Windows 7 start menu search field and then right click on the cmd.exe result instead of having to navigate through the various sub menus.

Your Computer?

How Clean is Your Computer?

You clean your house, you clean your car, you clean your clothes, but do you clean your computer? I’m not talking about deleting files, defragmenting your hard drive, or even virus/malware removal. I mean physically cleaning out the inside of your computer.

Why should you clean your computer?

Like all electronic equipment, your computer produces heat when it operates.  There are fans and vents on your computer to help cool it down and keep it operating smoothly.  If you don’t clean out your computer, dust, pet hair, and other debris collects in the vents and fans causing them to be less effective.
The resulting increase in heat makes your computer run slower, puts undue strain on the internal components (hard drives, processor, etc.), and can shorten the life of your computer.

How do I clean my computer?

Desktop Computer:
Step 1) Make sure the power is turned off and all cords are disconnected (NEVER open your computer while it is running).
Step 2) Open the computer case (may have screws on the back or a button to press if it is a screwless case).
Step 3) Take a can of compressed air and use it to blow out dust and other debris.  Make sure to clean the vents and fans thoroughly.
Step 4) Close up the case and plug in the computer.

Laptop Computer:
Step 1) Turn off the computer and detach the battery.
Step 2) Take a can of compressed air and blow out the vents along the side, back, and/or bottom of the computer.
You can wipe down the outside of the case with a dust rag and use LCD screen cleaner with a microfiber cloth to wipe down your screen. Compressed air can also be used to clean out the spaces in between the keys on your keyboard.
Do not let this happen to your laptop

Windows 7's 'GodMode'

Understanding Windows 7's so-called GodMode is actually a shortcut to accessing the operating system's various control settings.

By creating a new folder in Windows 7 and renaming it with a certain text string at the end, users are able to have a single place to do everything from changing the look of the mouse pointer to making a new hard-drive partition.

Enable 'GodMode' in Windows 7

The trick is also said to work in Windows Vista, although some are warning that although it works fine in 32-bit versions of Vista, it can cause 64-bit versions of that operating system to crash.
To enter "GodMode," one need only create a new folder and then rename the folder to the following:

                      GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
Once that is done, the folder's icon will change to resemble a control panel and will contain dozens of control options. I'm not sure it's my idea of playing God, but it is a handy way to get to all kinds of controls. I've asked Microsoft for more details on the feature and how it came to be. But so far, Microsoft is silent on the topic.

Remove Porn images?

Do you know that your computer stores traces of everything you do while working on the computer or surfing the Internet?

If you suspect pornography on your computer, here are some helpful tips on how to check.

First, begin by looking for image and video files on your computer.

Go to START menu

Select SEARCH then FIND FILES or FOLDERS

Enter
*.jpg in the “Search for files or folders named:” box

Your computer will then locate every .jpg image file ever downloaded onto that PC. (Every time you visit a website .jpg files are downloaded automatically) If pornography has been viewed on your computer those files will generally be recognizable by their names, which are often vulgar and profane. You can double-click on the file name to open and verify the nature of the image. There should be hundreds of .jpg image files on any given PC.

Repeat the procedure using *.gif, *.mpg, *.asf, *.mpeg, *.avi and *.wmv

(*.jpg & *.gif files are image files, the rest are video files. Video files would generally be present when a high-speed connection is in use)

Windows Support Scam Update 2011

The Windows Support Scam just seems to run and run. The scam that has been around since 2008.

For those that don’t know, this scam involves fraudsters cold calling people, claiming to be a Windows support tech and getting the victim to give them remote access to their PCs in the guise of helping them ‘cleanse’ their systems – as long as the victim hands over £185 or in some cases much more.

The ploy is to ask the victims to look at the event viewer on their PC which invariably has plenty of rather worrying (but totally harmless) warnings and alerts.

The victim is then told that these harmless warnings show that their PC is infested with viruses and that they are in deep trouble.

Once the seeds of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) are well sown, the fraudsters persuade the victim to let them access their PC. They do this using the perfectly legitimate logmein123.com service to logon to the victim’s PC, with the victim’s agreement.

They then ‘cleanse’ the PC running some bogus software which does nothing in the way of cleansing the PC and frequently, they logoff without leaving anything more than the logmein123.com client behind.

Recently however, reports are coming in that some fraudsters seem to be leaving behind evidence that work was done by another, legitimate company.

The issues to remember here is that Microsoft does not monitor all the PC’s in the World looking for ones generating signs of infection so if someone rings up suggesting that they are from or work on behalf of Microsoft, you can rely on it being a hoax.

Sometimes they claim to come from the victim’s ISP but again this is rare and if you do not know someone intimately, do not let them on your PC.

5 Ways to Secure a Wireless Connection

Wireless networks can be even less secure than wired networks, because anyone who has the most basic kinds of wireless network equipment at his disposal can tap into virtually any wireless network within range.

Even if you have little or no technical knowledge, you can secure your wireless network in little time with these 5 simple tips:

Secure your access point administration interface: The default passwords of most standard devices are already known to most hackers. So, when you set up your router through the web interface, change the default password and write it down somewhere safe.

Stop broadcasting your SSID: Your wireless router continuously transmits your SSID (Service Set Identifier). While this is useful in an office where many people are going to connect to your network, at home this is certainly not needed. Turn SSID transmission off as soon as you can. Wireless LAN "sniffers" will still be able to detect your network, but other than that, your network will mostly be shrouded from outsiders.

Use MAC address filtering: Turn on MAC address filtering on your wireless router configuration utility. By doing so, you can add the MAC addresses of all of your networking devices to the address pool of the router. This way, no one outside your home network will be able to access your network.
